Confirming Patient Understanding with Teach-Back

Summary:
Healthcare providers often ask patients whether they understand their care instructions, but a “yes” does not reveal what the patient has understood or will do after the encounter. After identifying medication errors, missed warning signs, and delayed follow-up linked to miscommunication during patient education, the client requested the rapid development and deployment of a microlearning course to address the performance gap.
The resulting 15-minute Rise and Storyline course introduces a practical three-step teach-back process: explain essential information clearly, check understanding with an open-ended prompt, and clarify anything missed. Contrasting examples distinguish teach-back from test-back, while focused interactions model effective language and techniques. A four-decision culminating scenario requires learners to guide a patient through wound-care instructions, uncover a misunderstanding, and close the communication loop. The finished course is a concise, evidence-informed experience centered on realistic clinical decisions and observable workplace behavior.
Eliminating Workplace Drama
Format: 30-minute self-paced course
Audience: Mid/Senior managers
Tools: Articulate Storyline 360, Canva, Descript (voice generation)
Summary:
Created in 2022, this course showcases an earlier generation of eLearning technology and interaction design. While some of the technical implementation reflects the tools and standards of the time, the instructional strategy, scenario-based learning, and performance-focused design principles remain relevant.
This client had grappled with significant internal factionalization following the acquisition and mismanaged integration of a smaller competitor about a year earlier. In response, my team and I successfully conducted strategic integration and team-building workshops for executives, directors, and mid-level managers. However, a post-project evaluation highlighted the fact that the workshops would likely have been more impactful had the audience been exposed to some of the more practical content before the workshops were held. This realization led to the creation of the course that you see here.
Now, this course is deployed as genericized pre-learning material ahead of workshops related to resolving workplace drama.
Requesting eConsults in Epic
Format: 45-minute self-paced course
Audience: Primary care providers in need of rapid specialty care support
Tools: Articulate Rise 360 and Storyline 360
Summary:
Primary care providers needed a consistent, efficient way to request eConsults in Epic, but successful adoption required more than knowing where to click. Providers also needed to determine when an eConsult was appropriate, set patient expectations, obtain consent, submit clinically useful information, and act on the specialist’s response. The client requested a flexible training experience that could support both first-time learning and later point-of-need reference.
The resulting 45-minute Rise course guides providers through the complete eConsult workflow—from identifying an appropriate case through billing and follow-up. Short, task-focused modules combine procedural guidance with clinical context, helping learners understand both how to complete each step and why it matters. Open navigation allows experienced providers to move directly to relevant sections, while a final assessment confirms understanding for continuing education credit. The finished course transforms a complex clinical and technical process into an accessible, reusable performance-support resource.
